Management of non-hazardous wastes

Management of non-hazardous wastes- Solid Waste Management:

1. Sanitary landfills:

The decline is spread in a hollow land or in a trench and compacted with a layer of clear sand fill. The sanitary landfills are far more enviable than open dumps though the ground water contamination is always a potential trouble. Once a land fill operation has been done the site should be inspected periodically. This land fill is appropriate for recreational activities like parks and play ground.

2. Incineration:

Municipal incinerators burn combustible solid waste and melt some non-combustible materials. As the high temperature demolishes pathogens and their vectors, it is a good technique of disposal from health point of view. The incineration can decrease the volume of solid waste by 80 to 90 %.

3. Reuse and recycling techniques:

Resource recovery is a broad word which is used for the retrieval of valuable materials or energy from a waste. The separating out of materials like glass, rubber, paper and scrap metal from decline and reprocessing them for reuse is termed as reclamation of waste or recycling.

Paper (54 percent recovery) can be repulped and reprocessed into recycled paper, cardboard and other paper products; lastly ground and sold as cellulose insulators or torn and composted.

Glass (20% recovery) can be crushed, remolded and made into new containers or utensils used as a replacement for gravel or sand in construction materials like concrete and asphalt.

Some forms of plastics (i.e., 2.2 % recovery) can be remolded and fabricated into another carpet fiber, irrigation drainage, fill for insulated apparel, tiles and sheet plastics.

Metals can be melted and re-fabricated (i.e., 39% percent).

Food wastes and yard wastes (i.e., leaves, grass and so on.) can be composted to generate humus soil conditioner.

Textiles can be shredded and employed to strengthen recycled paper products.

Old tyres can be shredded or remolded and incorporated into highway asphalt.
