Fourth Law of lamarckism or Proposition: Inheritance of Acquired Characters:

‘Body modifications or new characteristics obtained by an organism throughout its life time will automatically get transferred to the subsequent generation’.

While proposing this law, Lamarck did not give any specific illustration. In 1890, a German Scientist, August Weismann performed few experiments with rats. He chose a set of healthy male and female rats. He started cutting their tails constantly for more than twenty generations. This experiment was executed to confirm inheritance of the acquired character that is the tailless condition. Interestingly such a situation was never observed in any of the young rats born. This finding led to the proposition of the theory that any change to the body areas (i.e., somatoplasm) will not have persuade over the reproductive cells (i.e., Germplasm). Therefore Weismann, for the initial time segregated germplasm from the somatoplasm.

This led to the formulation of ‘Germplasm theory’ that states that ‘any change to the somatoplam will not have persuaded over the germplasm’.
