ECG-’PQRST’ wave:

Whenever the cardiac impulse (i.e., originating in sinus node that is the main pace maker) passes via the heart, electrical currents spread in the tissues surrounding the heart. A small quantity of this current spreads to the surface of the body.  When electrodes are positioned on the skin on opposite sides of the heart, electric potentials produced by such currents can be recorded. This recording is termed as electrocardiogram (i.e., ECG or EKG).

P.Wave:

It takes place in the auricles. It is an atrial wave. It is due to the spread of depolarization in the atria (i.e., auricles). Its duration is 0.1 second and it takes place just previous to the atrial systole. Its amplitude is around 0.1 to 0.3 mv. The cardiac impulse arrives at the sinu-auricular node at about the summit of the Pwave. The P wave is a guide to the action of atria.
