ECG-Electrocardiogram:
The electrocardiogram (i.e., ECG) is a record of the electric potential changes which take place in the heart throughout the cardiac cycle. It is recorded from the surface of the body. The device used to record the ECG is termed as Electrocardiogram. The waves of the ECG are due to the depolarization and not due to the contraction of heart. This wave of depolarization takes place first before the contraction of the cardiac muscle starts.
The electrical activity of the heart was initially recorded by Waller in the year 1887 with a capillary electrometer. Though the work of Einthoven who recorded the ECG with a strong galvanometer only lead to the growth of modern electrocardiography. Einthovan was awarded Nobel Prize in the year 1924.
A usual ECG is composed of five waves designated from left to right with the letters P, Q, R, S and T. P, R and T are generally upward or positive waves whereas Q and S are descending or negative waves.
