Angina pectoris:
Angina is a term which explains a strangling or constrictive pain. Angina has become synonymous with heart disorder known as Angina pectoris. This heart disorder refers to chest pain caused by inadequate supply of oxygen to the heart muscle, generally an outcome of poor blood supply. Angina pectoris generally takes place when the demand for oxygen is raised during exercise and at the time of stress. The pain generally comes on suddenly. The pain ranges from tight ache to intense crushing agony. It lasts for 30 minutes or more and it is not calmed by rest.
Causes:
(1). Insufficient blood supply to heart due to coronary artery disease like atherosclerosis.
(2). Harsh attack of anaemia that decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of blood.
(3). Polycythemia (i.e., increased number of red blood cells) that thickens the blood, causing it to slow its flow via the heart muscle.
(4). Thyrotoxicosis (i.e., a disorder caused by excessive secretion of thyroxine) can precipitate angina pectoris by building the heart work harder and quicker than its blood supply will allow.
