A software development process model is an abstract representation of a software process. So a software process model is a brief overview of the software process.  Each process model provides an abstract representation of its respective field. They do not provide any definition rather they include the abstract of it.

These generic models are not definitive descriptions of software processes. Rather they are useful abstraction which can be used to explain different approaches to software development. First the problem is understood and recognized by the customers. The customers may require either some modification in the old system or to develop a complete new system to replace the old one. So the appropriate solution is developed, modules are tested individually and then combined for integration testing, and at last the whole integrated software evaluated by the customers.
