1. Repositories

There are two  types of components in a repository. A central data store and a collection of interconnected components  that operate on it to store retrieve and update information. Fig 5.27, illustrates a typical black board ( repository) . usually a black board  consists of three aspects. The  blackboard itself, knowledge sources  and the control.

An  advantage  of  this type of architecture is its openness, the data representation is  often  made available to several  vendors so that  can build  tools  to access the  repository. But  this characteristic is a disadvantage too.

2. Interpreters

An interpreter takes a string of characters called  pseudo code, and transforms  in not  actual code  that is then executed. Thus  interpreter is a machine  to interpret the  pseudo code into  the executable  form.

3. Process Control

Shaw and Garlan has shown that process control  systems  are very  different from function  or object based design  which  are characterized by the kinds  of components  that  appear in the  design.

Process control system  are characterized by the types of components  and their  interrelationships. The purpose of a process control  system is to maintain specific properties of process outputs or near specified reference values called  set points. For an example the  home  heating and cooling system  uses a thermostat  to monitor air temperature and  then controls  the furnace and air  conditioner to keep  the air temperature within an acceptable range. The most common software based  control system includes a closed loop one  of two  forms, feedback and feed forward as shown in fig 5.28.

A feedback system measures a controlled variable  like temperature and  adjusts  the  process accordingly to keep the controlled variable near or at  the set  point. In  feed forward, the  system tries to anticipate future effects on the controlled variable by  measuring  other process variables that may be good indicators. A  feed forward system is more  appropriate than  a feedback  one.
