Introduction to Programming Style Metrics
In the last section we have discussed many issue and rules related to the programming style. The programming style effects the readability of a program hence it will be very useful if we can quantify the programming style. In general what is considered a good style will also depend on the local coding conventions and the coding standards of the organization. However some general guidelines for style can be formulated. In Jan 1985. R. E .Berry and B. A.E. Me eking proposed an approach to quantify the programming style of a program in their book, A style analysis of C programs. In this approach the following factors are considered to affect the programming style.
1. Module length : A module length is defined as the average length of modules in the program. It is measured for non commented and nonblank lines.
2. Identifier Length: An identifier length is measured in characters. It is the average length of the user defined identifiers.
3. Comment Lines: Comment lines can be quantified as the percentage of the comment lines in total lines of code of the program.
4. Indentation: The indentation is checked as the ratio of initial spaces to total number of characters. So its relation can be given as:
Indentation Measurement =Initial Spaces/Total Number of Character
5. Blank Lines: Blank lines take the percentage of blank with the total number of lines. As blank lines are used by programming to highlight the structure of the program so their usage affects the readability.
6. Line Length : A line length is find out as the average number or nonblank characters in a line.
7. Embedded Spaces: Embedded spaces quantification can be done as the average number of embedded spaces in a line. These are significant for the readability of arithmetic and logical expressions and declarations.
8. Constants definitions: Constant definitions quantity in a program is measured as the percentage of will user identifiers that are defined as constants.
9. Reserved Words: In this case the number of reserved words and standard library functions used are counted. A high value shows a better use of facilities available to the programmer.
10. Include Files : The number of files that are include in a program is measured. This represents how a program has been divided into files.
11. Gotos : The number of occurrences of the go to statement provides the total number of go to statement as its measurement. It is assumed that a figure of 1 is best that means no use of go to statement in a program is the best case because then it will follow the structured programming principles.
