The Evolution of Programming Language
A programming language is a systematic notation by which one describes the computational processes to others. A computational process is nothing more than a set of steps which a machine can perform. So to describe the solution of a problem onto a computer, we need to know a set of commands that the computer can understand and execute. Given the diversity of tasks that computers can do today people naturally find it surprising that the computer built in abilities are so primitive. When a computer comes off the assembly line it will usually be able to do only arithmetic and logical operations, input and output, and some control functions. These capabilities constitute the machine language of the computer. But this machine language was so difficult to use read, and understand that why high level programming languages evolved for the software development purpose. These high level languages use less primitive notations than machine level language, and hence they require a program which will interpret their meaning to the computer. This program is not generally part of the computer circuitry but is provided as part of the system software which is included with the computer.
As much the of concept of a programming language is relatively new and it is rather surprising that there is almost no early historical evidence of the development of notations for computational processes. Over many centuries mathematicians have developed highly sophisticated notation for describing static, functional relationship. The well know binomial or the famous Fourier transform are just two examples. But as far as is known no formal notation for describing computational processes was ever devised until modern times. So a natural language and an informal style were usually adopted whenever a need would arise.
The development of the Morden digital computer has given a great stimulus to the development of notations for processes. Thus a programming language is usually taken to mean a notation for describing computational processes to a computer. But as people must create and modify their programs and read the programs written by others a programming language must be intelligible t human and machine alike.
Before proceeding further to discuss about the programming languages first, it will be better to example a brief history of the development of programming languages in order that we might better understand the recent progress that has been made and the situations we find ourselves in today.
