Significance of Bragg’s equation:
1) When we use X-rays of identified wavelength (λ), then the interatomic distance (d) in an unknown crystal can be computed. On the other hand, when we use a crystal whose interatomic distance‘d’ is identified, then the wavelength of X-rays can be computed.
2) The Bragg’s equation provides the necessary condition for diffraction to take place.
3) Whenever the experiment is completed, there will be a maximum reflection at a specific angle θ. That angle is observed. It corresponds to first order reflection (i.e., n = 1). When the angle ‘θ’ is raised, maximum reflection takes place at some other higher angle. It corresponds to second order reflection (i.e., n=2). Likewise, third, fourth and higher order of reflection take place at certain specific angles. The values of angles acquired are in accordance with the Bragg’s equation.
Therefore Bragg’s equation is experimentally confirmed.
