  Mycetoma

Mycetoma:

Mycetoma is a chronic suppurative granulomatuos sub-cutaneous infection with numerous discharging sinuses. This is otherwise termed as fungal tumor. Generally it takes place in the foot and it is termed as Madura foot. Other parts of the body such as neck, hand, shoulder and head are too affected.

This is caused by two kinds of organisms. They are:

1. Actinomycotic agents,    
2. Eumycotic agents.    

The actinomycotic agents are:

(a) Nocardia sps. 
(b) Streptomyces sps.
(c) Actinomyces.

Eumycetoma is caused by true fungi. They are:

(a) Madurella mycetomi
(b)  Madurella greisea
(c) Pseudllecheria boydii
(d) Acremonium falciformi 
(e) Exophiala jeanselmi.

There are few other fungi that also cause mycetoma infrequently:  

(a) Curvularia lunata
(b) Curvularia geniculata
(c) Penicillium mycetogenum
(d) Fusarium solani
