In transition elements, d-orbitals of penultimate shell are consecutively filled. The primary transition series includes the filling of 3d orbitals. It begins from scandium (i.e., Z=21) and goes up to zinc (i.e., Z=30).

The second transition series includes the filling of 4d-orbitals and comprises 10 elements from yttrium (i.e., Z=39) to cadmium (i.e., Z=48).

The third transition series includes filling of 5d-orbitals. The primary element of this series is lanthanum (i.e., Z=57). It is followed by fourteen elements termed as lanthanides that include the filling of 4f-orbitals. The next nine elements from hafnium (i.e., Z=72) to mercury (i.e., Z=80) belong to third transition series.

The common electronic configuration of transition elements is (n-1) d1-10 ns1-2.
