In complex compound, it generally, central metal ion and the ligands are enclosed within square bracket and termed as coordination sphere. This symbolizes a single constituent unit. The ionisable species are located outside the square bracket.

Such ions do not ionise to provide the test for constituent ions.

The coordination number of a metal ion in complex can be stated as the number of ligand donor atoms to which the metal is directly bonded.
