Usage of Alternate Sizes

Introduction to the Usage of Alternate Sizes of Winding Wires:

1. If rewinding is completed, make use of the presented winding wire gauge number for the new winding. Occasionally if similar gauge winding wire is not available then we can employ the 2 runs of wire each comprising half of the area of cross section of the original one.

Table:  A sample of gauge No's and its equal are given in the following table.

2. Area of Cross-section of one specific wire gauge number is twice more than of gauge number, while increased by three. For instance area of cross-section for 17 gauge wires is about twice more than that of 20 gauge wires. If 17 gauge wires are not presented then we use two 20 gauge wires.

3. While 20 gauge and 17 gauge wires are employed for particular length, then the weight of 17 gauge wires are double as of the weight of the 20 gauge wire, since weight is directly proportional to the area of cross-section of the wire.

4. Resistance of the winding wire is not directly proportional to the cross-sectional area of the wire. Hence, the resistance of 17 gauge wire is half of the resistance value of 20 gauge wire.

5. Winding's Resistance is calculated in two methods.

(i) Using multimeter, the resistance of the winding is directly calculated in ohms or kilo ohms.

(ii) 15 to 20 per cent value of the rated voltage is applied through using auto transformer to every phase of three phase winding. After that current in each phase is calculated and after that the resistance of the winding is measured.
