Different Operations of Centrifugal Pump
A centrifugal pump should never be allowed to run dry.
The pump gland packings are water cooled and water lubricated. Water also works as a obstacle among the atmosphere and the interior of the pump. If the pump is permitted to run dry, extreme heat will be produced resultant in possible seizure of the spindle and will result in burn out of the motor. Hence, no pump should be permitted to run dry or started unless it is fully primed.
Priming of pump
The meaning of priming is filling the pump and the suction pipe completely with water that is why all air is expelled from the system. Not only should the pump be completely primed while it is began, but it should stay fully primed throughout the period it is running.
Self-priming pump
The self priming centrifugal pump is planned to lift water from a level below the pump suction without comprising to fill the suction piping with liquid. It achieved this through making a partial vacuum at the pump suction that removes the air from the suction line. The pump after that releases the entrapped air by its discharge when retaining the initial fill of water in the pump case. This air or water separation is what creates the self primer different. Even though the self priming centrifugal pump will eliminate all air from its suction piping, it will not "dry prime".
The pump case has to be filled with water before than the starting. The foot valve, employed at the base end of suction pipe should withhold water in the suction pipe. There should be no leakage of water through the foot valve. As well, there must be a method for the air to get away the discharge of the pump. If the discharge piping is not open to atmosphere, an air release valve has to be installed.
Automatic operation of a pump
A pumping installation can be simply wired for automatic control through installing a float switch on the High Level storage tank. This makes sure that the pump is started while the level of the water falls down to, say, half the tank and automatically stopped while the tank becomes full. The only one thing to be made sure is that the pump is kept completely primed all the time. Hence, the suction system and the foot valve should be well kept so that water is taken through the valve for long periods and the pipe joints are air tight that is why no air may leak in. One condition that should be all the time sure is that water level in the well should not fall under the foot valve. This can be taken care through giving a low-level float switch in the well, in order to cut off the power supply to the motor, if the water level falls excessively in the well. Quite frequently pumps are unattended for long periods. In which pumps are not working constantly and are probable to be off for long periods, it is best to make sure priming of the pump earlier than the pump is started.
