Introduction to GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a mobile data service presented to users of GSM mobile phones. GPRS is frequently defined as "2.5G", i.e., a technology among the second generations (2G) and third generations (3G) of mobile telephony. It gives moderate speed data transfer, through using not used TDMA channels in the GSM network. Initially there was a few thought to extend GPRS to cover another standards, but in its place those networks are being converted to make use of the GSM standard, that is why is the only type of network in which GPRS is in use. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is integrated into GSM standards.
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is dissimilar from the older Circuit Switched Data or abbreviated CSD connection involved in GSM standards. GPRS is packet-switched that means that multiple users share similar transmission channel, just transmitting whiles they contain data to send. Web browsing receiving e-mails like they arrive and instant messaging are instances of uses. Generally, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) data is billed per kilobytes of information transceived when circuit switched data connections are billed every second.
GPRS class 8 is also termed as 4+1. The meaning of this is that the 4 slots are allotted to downloading and a single slot to uploading. This profile is suitable for applications in which data is mostly downloaded, like web browsing. If the user reads more e-mail than he/she sends, this is also a suitable profile.
GPRS class 10 is also termed as 4+2. The meaning of this is that 4 slots are allotted to downloading and 2 slots to uploading, but no above 5 slots might be employed at similar time. This profile is suitable for applications in which data is sent back.
Each slot can arrive at a maximum of 14.4 kilobit per second.
