Introduction to First Generation Computers
First generation computers are employed Thermion valves. First generation computers were huge in size and writing programs on them was complicated. A number of the computers of this generation were:
ENIAC:
ENIAC was the first electronic computer developed in the year 1946 at University of Pennsylvania, USA (united state of America) by John Eckert and John Mauchy. It was termed Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator (ENIAC). The ENIAC was weighed 30 tons, 30× 50 feet long, consisted of 18,000 vacuum tubes, 70,000 registers, and 10,000 capacitors and needed 150,000 watts of electricity. Nowadays your favourite computer is several times as powerful as ENIAC, still size is extremely small.
EDVAC:
EDVAC stands for Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer and was built in the year 1950. The notion of storing data and instructions within the computer was introduced here. This permitted much faster operation because the computer had fast access to both data and instructions. Another advantage of storing instruction was that computer could carry out logical decision internally.
OTHER IMPORTANT COMPUTERS OF FIRST GENERATION
EDSAC:
EDSAC stands for Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Computer and was built by M.V. Wilkes at Cambridge University in the year 1949.
UNIVAC-1:
Mauchly and Ecker generated it in the year 1951 through Universal Accounting Computer setup.
LIMITATIONS OF FIRST GENERATION COMPUTER
Followings are the main limitations of First generation computers.
A. The operating speed was fairly slow.
B. Power consumption was extremely high.
C. It needed large space for installation.
D. The programming ability was quite low.
