The protoplasm is a living component of the plant cell and includes four portions

(i) The cytoplasm
(ii) The vacuoles
(iii) A number of organelles
(iv) The nucleus.

Wilson Fischer in the year 1894 considered the protoplasm as a polyphase colloidal system.
