Photoperiodism:

Photoperiodism is the response of a plant to the comparative lengths of light and dark periods. In plants, most important photoperiodic response is the beginning of flowering. It has been first discovered in Maryland Mammoth range of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum).

From the inspection of Garner and Allard all the plants do not need similar length of light and dark periods for flowering.   Plants need particular period of light and darkness for flowering. It is termed as critical period.

Plants are classified into three classes:

1. Long day plant:
The plants needs longer exposure to light as compared to their critical period is known as long day plants example wheat and oats.

2. Short day plants:
The plants that need light for a shorter period as compared to their critical period are termed as short day plants example tobacco and Chrysanthemum.

3. Day neutral plants:
The plants where flowering is not affected by the photoperiod are termed as day neutral plants example sunflower and maize.
