The two molecules of pyruvic acid created from a glucose molecule move into mitochondria and are decarboxylated, oxidized to two molecules of acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl Co~A). These 2 carbon compounds are created through dehydrogenation and decarboxylation.
This reaction is catalyzed through pyruvic dehydrogenase and 2 molecules of NAD+ are reduced to NADH. Throughout this reaction 2 molecules of CO2 are released.
