Collenchyma usually takes place in the dicot stems in two or more than two layers below the epidermis.  These layers comprise the hypodermis. It is not present in the roots of land plants. It as well takes place in petiole and pedicel. It provides power to young organs.  Collenchyma is a living tissue. It contains more or less elongated cells that are polygonal in cross section. The cell wall is unequally thickened. The thickening is limited to the corners of the cells. Besides cellulose, the cell wall consists of high amounts of hemicellulose and pectin.

Collenchyma may consist of chloroplasts and perform photosynthesis. Collenchyma is categorized into three types -

1. lamellar,

2. angular and

3. lacunate collenchyma.

In the Helianthus' hypodermis, just the tangential walls of collenchyma are thickened and the radial walls are devoid of thickening. This category of collenchyma is termed as lamellar collenchyma.    In the hypodermis of Nicotiana and Datura, the cell walls of collenchyma are thickened at their angles.  This category is termed as angular collenchyma.  The cell wall thickening materials are deposited on the walls bordering the intercellular spaces in the hypodermis of Ipomoea. This type is termed as lacunate collenchyma.
