Osmosis:

If a protein solution is gets separated through a semipermeable membrane from pure water, water tends to flow from the latter to the former. The movement’s property of solvent particles is known as osmosis. Osmosis is the complete diffusion of water from the dilute solution to the concentrated solution. Osmosis is a colligative property of solution which relies on the number of molecules or ions of the solute in the solutions. Osmol units provide the number of osmotically active particles each mole of a solute. Every mole of a non-ionized solute is equal to 1 osmol. Osmolarity of a solution is the solute concentration of it in osmols or litre. Osmolality of a solution is the solute concentrations of it in osmols or kg of the solvent.

Two solutions with similar osmotic pressures are known as iso- osmotic solutions. A solution comprising lower/higher osmotic pressure along with respect to the other is known as hypo-osmotic/hyperosmotic solutions correspondingly.

The plasma membrane is a semi permeable membrane and it permits only specific solutes to diffuse. The osmotic pressure showed by these impermeable solutes is known as the tonicity of the solution. Tonicity is a significant physiological parameter.
Two solutions with similar tonicities are known as isotonic solutions. A solution comprising lower/higher tonicities with respect to another is known as hypotonic/hypertonic solutions correspondingly.
