In its place, glycerol passes to the liver in which it is phosphorylated to glycerol 3-phosphate via the enzyme glycerol kinase.

Glycerol + ATP (Glycerol kinase) → Glycerol 3-phosphate + ADP

This type of pathway connects the triose phosphate stage of glycolysis, since glycerol 3-phosphate is oxidized to dihydroxy acetone phosphate in the existence of NAD+ and glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase.
