The electron transport chain in the above diagram contains series of proteins that tightly bound includes the passage of a pair of electrons from one chemical to the next, where each chemical in the sequence has less reduced energy as compared to the previous. The electron transport chain oxidizes (that is “burns”) the NADH + H+ and FADH2 cofactors, by using molecular oxygen like the final electron acceptor. Electron carriers and hydrogen-electron acceptors are situated alternatively to perform the function in the electron transport chain. There are 3 dissimilar regions in the electron transport chain, in which energy is released. In each region there is a creation of one ATP (Adenosine triphosphates). All these reactions and capturing of energy occurs in mitochondria.
