Contraceptive pills normally contain the hormones progesterone and estrogen. If taken on a daily basis from the 4th day after menses the unusual elevation of these hormones acts on the hypophysis hypothalamus endocrine axis preventing the LH and FSH secretions. Because these hormones then don’t reach their usual high levels at the time of menstrual cycle, ovulation doesn’t take place. (Treatment with contraceptive pills should be started under medical supervision.)
