A decrease to a half of the maximum normal quantity of chromosomes is obligatory in some stage of the life cycle of a species which reproduces sexually. When that could not occur in each generation, if a zygote is made by fusion of gametes there would be duplication in the amount of chromosomes in a geometric progression.
