The roots have a central portion which is known as medulla which is made of vascular tissue (outer phloem and inner xylem). The medulla is surrounded by medullary parenchyma and delimited by the pericycle, a meristem which originates secondary roots (ramifications).
Externally to the medulla lies cortical portion formed of the endodermis (that surrounds the pericycle) and cortical parenchyma. The covering of roots is epidermis (with root hairs) later substituted by the suberized (corky) periderm.
