The adenohypophisys secretes GH (or growth hormone), prolactin, ACTH (or adrenocorticotropic hormone), TSH (or thyroid-stimulating hormone), FSH (or follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (or luteinizing hormone).GH, also named as somatotropic hormone (or STH), acts on bones, cartilages and muscles encouraging the growth of these tissues. Prolactin is hormone that in women stimulates the production and secretion of milk by mammary glands.

The ACTH is hormone which stimulates the cortical portion of adrenal gland to produce and secrete the cortical hormones (glucocorticoids). The TSH is hormone which stimulates the activity of thyroid gland raising the production and secretion of its hormones T3 and T4. The FSH is a gonadotropic hormone, that is, it stimulates the gonads and in women it acts on the ovaries inducing growth of follicles, in men it stimulates spermatogenesis. The LH is also a gonadotropic hormone which acts on the ovaries of women to stimulate ovulation and formation of corpus luteum (which secretes estrogen) and in men on the testicles to stimulate production of testosterone.
