There is no normally accepted description for the TP monitor. As per the Jeri Edwards' a TP Monitor is defined as an OS for the transaction processing.
TP Monitor performs mainly the two tasks:
a) Process management and
b) Transaction management.
They were generally initiated in order to run the classes of applications which could service hundreds and sometimes thousands of the clients. TP Monitors give an OS - on top of existing OS - which link in real time these thousands of humans along with the group of the shared server processes.
