At sending and receiving end of the transmission, TCP decompose long transmissions into the smaller data units and packages each into the frame known as a segment.
Whenever the size of data unit obtained from the upper layer too large for the network layer datagram or data link layer frame to handle the data, the transport protocol decompose it into smaller usable blocks. This dividing process is known as segmentation.
