Explain what is Project 802?
Expert
It refers to a project which is introduced by the IEEE to set the standards which allow intercommunication between the equipment from variety of the manufacturers. It refers to the way for specifying functions of the physical layer, data link layer and to some extent the network layer to enable the interconnectivity of major LAN protocols.
It comprises of the following:
a) 802.1 refer to an internetworking standard for the compatibility of several LANs and MANs across the protocols.
b) 802.2 Logical link control (LLC) refers to the upper sub layer of the data link layer that is non-architecture-specific which stays the same for all the IEEE-defined LANs. Media access control (MAC) is defined as the lower sub layer of the data link layer which consists of some distinct modules each carrying the proprietary information specific to the LAN product which is being used. The modules are Token ring LAN (802.4), Ethernet LAN (802.3), Token bus LAN (802.5).
