Phellogen , also called as the cork cambium, refers to the meristematic plant tissue which is responsible for the making of the periderm (the covering of the shoots, stem and roots). The inner side of phellogen layer makes the phelloderm and its outer side makes the cork (suber). The suber liberates the suberin, an impermeable substance which permeates the tissue.
