What is Geographic Information System or GIS

Geographic Information System (GIS): It is a system of software and hardware used for retrieval, storage, mapping, and analysis of geographic data. Practitioners as well regard the total GIS as together with the operating personnel and data which go into the system. Spatial features are stored in the coordinate system (latitude or longitude, state plane, UTM, and so on), which references a specific place on the earth. Descriptive attributes in tabular form are related with spatial features. Spatial data and related attributes in similar coordinate system can then be layered altogether for mapping and analysis. GIS can be employed for scientific investigations, development planning and resource management.
