What is folic acid
Explain what is folic acid? Why anemia is caused due to the deficiency of folic acid also known as megaloblastic anemia?
Expert
Folic acid, when ionized it is also known as folate is a coenzyme which participates in synthesis and duplication of the DNA and for this reason it is essential for the cell division. If there folic acid is not enough within the cells with large turnover, such as red blood cells, they have their production decreased. In the folic acid deficiency precursor cells or reticulocytes which would originate the erythrocytes starts tha cell division but this process is quite slow whereas the cytoplasm growth is normal. Thus cells became abnormally large, a feature of this kind of anemia also known as megaloblastic anemia. Megaloblastic anemia may be caused also due to vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) deficiency as this vitamin is significant for the cell division too. Both types of anemia are nutrient deficiency anemias.
