2G or 2-G stands for second-generation wireless telephone technology. Second generation (2G) cellular telecom networks were commercially established on the GSM standard in the Finland in the year 1991. Three primary advantages of the 2G networks over their predecessors were that phone conversations were encrypted digitally, 2G systems were considerably more proficient on the spectrum enabling for far greater mobile phone penetration levels; and 2G established data services for mobile, starting with the SMS text messages.
