Radial symmetry (biologically) means that the animal structures are located in a circular or radial pattern around a center point with non-existence of sides, such as right or left. An alternative kind of symmetry in which structures are located equally in the sides of a longitudinal axis is the lateral symmetry (that is, the symmetry exists in human beings, for illustration).

The Chordates present lateral symmetry. Besides cnidarians the other animal phylum with species representing secondary radial symmetry is the phylum Echinodermata. (That is, it is considered that the simplicity of poriferans doesn’t characterize any symmetry.)
