Hemoglobin is the protein existed in the blood accountable for the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the cells and tissues.

The hemoglobin molecule is comprised of four protein chains, each with a heme group having an iron atom. The iron is accountable for the binding of oxygen in the lungs and as well for the red color of hemoglobin and therefore of the blood.
