To form DNA molecule, purine bases bind to the pyrimidine bases through intermolecular bonds called hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen bonds take place when there is hydrogen near one of these electronegative elements: oxygen, nitrogen or fluorine. In such situation hydrogen looks like having lost electrons for those elements and extremely strong polarization is created. The highly positive hydrogen attracts the pairs of electrons of other molecules making the hydrogen bond.
