Twins are concurrently generated offspring within the mother’s uterus. Twins are classified according to the zygosity as:

a) Monozygotic or

b) Dizygotic twins.

Monozygotic twins, also termed as the identical twins, are those originated from one single fertilized ovum (thus, from one single zygote); monozygotic twins are genetically identical, that is, they have same genotypes and are inevitably of the same sex. Dizygotic twins, also called as fraternal twins, are those produced from two different ova fecundated through two different sperm cells; thus they are not genetically identical and they are not essentially of the same sex.
