“Chondros” indicates cartilage, “ictis” signify fish both are from the Greek; the name chondrichtians is for fishes with cartilaginous endoskeleton whereas the name osteichthyes comes from the existence of the bony endoskeleton in these fishes (“osteo” stands for bone, from the Greek too).
