The Ovaries-Female anatomy: All life begins with the OVUM or egg released by the female – but just like the sperm it doesn’t begin life as an egg cell – it begins as an OOCYTE. The process of developing from an oocyte to an ovum is called OOGENESIS and begins in the OVARIES with specialized cells called FOLLICLES. The follicles contain two types of cells – the PRIMARY OOCYTE and the GRANULOSA. The latter will provide the much needed nutrients for the oocytes. When the nutrient follicle cells surrounding the oocyte begin to divide it forms a secondary ooctye at one end and a polar body at the other each with 23 chromosomes or half the number of chromosomes of the female. Eventually the polar body dies and the secondary oocyte develops and bursts out the cavity that it has been forming in – this is called OVULATION.
