BTEQ(Basic teradata query):

It permits us to write SQL statements beside with BTEQ commands. We can utilize BTEQ for importing, exporting and then reporting purposes.

The commands start along with a (.) dot and can be terminated using (;), this is not mandatory to utilize (;). SQL statements doesn’t begin with a dot, but (;) is compulsory to terminate the SQL statement.
BTEQ will suppose anything written without a dot like a sql statement and needs a (;) to terminate this.
