The glucose blood level (or glycemia) should be kept normal. When it is abnormally low, there is not sufficient glucose to supply energetic metabolism of the cells. When it is abnormally and chronically very high it causes rigorous harm to the peripheral nerves, the retina, the skin, the kidneys and other significant organs and it might predispose to cardiovascular diseases (that is, acute myocardial infarction, strokes, thrombosis and so on). When it is acutely too high medical emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state might occur.
