Seminal Fluid: The sperm cannot get to the vagina all by themselves they have to be carried in a very special fluid that literally “paves” the way for their treacherous journey.  It’s like trying to swim on dry land – it can’t be done!  The SEMINAL FLUIDS are secreted by three glands along the vas deferens and ejaculatory duct.  Fluidsfrom the SEMINAL VESICLE contain fructose – a simple sugar  – and prostaglandins. The fructose provides the much needed energy and the prostaglandins act as the chemical signal in the female system triggering rhythmic contractions to carry the sperm to the fallopian tubes. The PROSTATE GLAND secretes  an alkaline buffer that protects the sperm from the acidic nature of the vagina. The COWPERS GLAND  secretes mucus rich fluids prior to EJACULATION which are thought to protect the sperm from the acidic nature of the urethra!  Once the sperm have left the confines of the  epididymis  they can only live 24-72 hours at regular body temperature yet at -100’C they have survived many years!
