Respiratory acidosis is the process in which pH of the blood decreases due to the increase in the retention of carbon dioxide because of the lowering of frequency of respiration or through the pulmonary diseases which impede the process of the gas exchange. Thus, the cause of respiratory acidosis is pulmonary respiration. Metabolic acidosis is that where pH of the blood becomes low not because of the pulmonary retention of carbon dioxide but because of metabolic disturbances. Some metabolic disturbances may cause in the liberation in blood of non-volatile acids which releases hydrogen ions lowering down of the blood pH (e.g., diabetic ketoacidosis).Respiratory alkalosis refers to the process in which the pH becomes high due to increased expelling of the carbon dioxide caused by the increased frequency of the respiration. Metabolic alkalosis is the alkalosis which is caused due to metabolic disturbances which increases the amount of bases (alkalis) within the blood.
