In fishes, gas exchange is completed by direct contact of water with the branchiae (that is, gills). Gases gain and leave the circulation via the gills. In adult amphibians gas exchange is completed via the moist and permeable skin (that is, cutaneous respiration) and also via the lungs, a set of tiny airway terminations related to a highly vascularized tissue specialized in the gas exchange.

The axolotl, an exotic amphibian found in Mexico which lives in water and “breathes” via gills even as an adult.
