Reptiles and birds-body temperature

How dissimilar are reptiles and birds regarding the maintenance of body temperature? Are birds rare in Polar areas?

Reptiles are heterothermic, that is, they do not control their body temperature. Birds though are the first homeothermic animals; they are capable to maintain their body temperature stable. There are numerous birds which live in intense cold areas. Penguins are illustrations of birds which live in polar area.
