Protease-supplying cells of stomach
Why do protease-supplying cells of stomach and the pancreas make just precursors of the active proteolytic enzymes?
Expert
The stomach and pancreas form zymogens of the proteases pepsin, antrypsin, chymotrypsin and such zymogens are discharged into the gastric or duodenal lumen for the activation. This occurs to prevent the digestion of such organ’s (pancreas and stomach) own cells and tissues by the active form of enzymes. Therefore the production of zymogens is a protective strategy against the natural consequences of the proteolytic enzymes.
