The diaphragm and the intercostal muscles contracts and relaxes as per the thorax volume, compartment where there are lungs. The change of volume of thorax forces inhalation or expiration. When the thorax volume is lowered internal pressure increases above the external pressure and the air gets expelled from the lungs.
