The covering tissues, or the dermal tissues, of the plants includes the epidermis which covers the leaves and young stems and shoots and the periderm, a tissue which replaces the epidermis in the stems, shoots and roots. The periderm is formed of the phellogen, phelloderm and suber (cork).
